Stainless Steel Tempers
In addition to annealed (also called soft stainless steel), Stainless Sales Corporation carries stock in a range of tempers. Tempered stainless steel has been hardened to various degrees. As hardness increases, the tensile strength and yield strength increase.
Stainless Sales Corporation carries stock 201, 301, 304 in the SOFT, ¼ HARD, ½ HARD, ¾ HARD and FULL HARD conditions with other tempers and grades available upon request.
We certify annealed (soft stainless steel) material to ASTM A240 and tempered material to ASTM A666. Certifications will report hardness, yield strength and elongation. In general, these three properties will correlate. However, only one of the properties can be guaranteed. Unless otherwise requested, we will provide material to meet hardness. If you prefer that we meet the minimum tensile instead, please let us know.
- ¼ HARD – RC 25 minimum or tensile 125,000 psi minimum
- ½ HARD – RC 30 minimum or tensile 150,000 psi minimum
- ¾ HARD – RC 35 minimum or tensile 175,000 psi minimum
- FULL HARD – RC 40 minimum or tensile 185,000 psi minimum
Additional AMS specifications can also be met upon request:
- 301 ¼ HARD stainless steel – AMS 5517
- 301 ½ HARD stainless steel – AMS 5518
- 301 FULL HARD stainless steel – AMS 5519
- 304 ¼ HARD stainless steel – AMS 5910
- 304 ½ HARD stainless steel – AMS 5911
- 304 FULL HARD stainless steel – AMS 5913
